Vejer de la Frontera, Costa de la Luz
Slotted between the sierras and the sea 10 km inland and 200m high above the gorge of the River Barbate this hill town is a beautifully preserved example of a classic Andalucian town. Vejer de la Frontera is located along the Costa de la Luz, within the province of Cadiz. It is a picturesque town perched high on a limestone headland.
If you are able take the more interesting route into Vejer, from the outpost at the bottom of the ravine called La Barca de Vejer.
From here take the steep road up which leads straight into the beautiful Plaza de España, undoubtedly one of the prettiest village squares in Spain. The town square, which is circular in design and shaded by vast palm trees, has a wonderful old fountain with traditional ceramic Andalucian frogs, spouting water high into the air. 

The town hall is located in the square and a notable feature is the facade of the fabled Casa de la Inquisición.  The numerous bars and restaurants surrounding the square makes this a popular meeting point. It should be noted that in Vejer´s gastronomy the famous "Lomo en manteca" (loin in lard) is outstanding.
Declared a national monument in 1978 Vejer is a labyrinth of white washed houses & winding cobbled streets. The majority of the houses date back to the Moorish times and all around you will notice an Arabian influence. There are many local artisan shops in the town, all offering hand-made goods at realistic prices.

The village itself has been officially declared an Historical Artistic Monument of National importance.  There are many ancient monuments to discover here. In particular look out for the following:
Santuario de Nuestra Senora de la Oliva - a local chapel, which houses a 16th century carved image of the Virgin Mary.  Casa Marquez de Tamaron - an old building now used as the Casa de la Cultura which is where the local town hall organises cultural events. The public library and tourist office are also located here.  Hidden in the old quarter you will find an Arab castle dating back to the 11th century, climb the castle walls for a panoramic view of the open countryside.
The Church of El Divino Salvador built on the site of an old Mosque has an impressive high altar and an important collection of Flemish brasses.  Part of the church is covered in ivy but you will still see evidence of its various styles.
Once you have explored the town at just 9 Kms. away, Vejer has a wonderful beach called "El Palmar" (beside the Trafalgar lighthouse).  It has fine sand and clear water, perfect for underwater fishing and water sports.  Hang gliding is also popular here.
