Conil de la Frontera, Costa de la Luz

Conil is situated to the south-west of the province of Cádiz, (40 kms away) on the Costa de la Luz coastline, and combines the beauty of the Sierra de Grazalema white town and the charm of the typical fishing town on the coast. There are 16kms of long sandy beaches fringed by low cliffs, aged pine forests and fields of sunflowers.

This authentic Spanish fishing town of Conil de la Frontera has around about 16,000 inhabitants. The area is pretty and unspoilt and is in keeping with the inhabitants' way of life - as they make their living from farming, fishing, trading, small businesses and also from tourism.

Conil is fast becoming popular with summer tourists, particularly the Spanish themselves. Because of this it still retains it's typical Andalucian feel with narrow cobbled streets, real Tapas bars, open-air markets at weekends and pavement cafes around the main plazas. July and August are particularly busy with the Spanish and the Town comes to life with its numerous and welcoming fiestas.

In the centre of the Conil town there are still many ruins dating back to the Moorish period, which can be discovered whilst exploring the small alleyways and narrow streets. There are also numerous peaceful and traditional styled inner courtyards with beautiful landscaping and creative decoration.

The surrounding area of the town has a very diverse landscape, with its coastline, old town features, undeveloped open countryside with forests and villages scattered round about. The network of footpaths around Conil offer interesting walks, while there are also local riding stables, tennis courts and several golf courses. Visitors can also enjoy exploring the nearby cities of Cadiz, Jerez andSeville with their beautiful architecture, sherry bodegas, horse riding exhibitions and fiestas.

The wide bay of brilliant yellow beach stretches for miles to either side of the town and is lapped by a surprisingly, gentle Atlantic. Look out for Los Bateles, La Fontanilla, Fuente del Gallo, and the Calas de Roche. They are said to be the most beautiful beaches of all the Spanish coastlines! Directly in front of the town is a family orientated favourite, whilst up to the northwest you can walk to some more sheltered coves, and across the river to the southeast, with its hidden coves the beach areas are popular with nudists.

An hour to the south you will find Tarifa, Gibraltar and Algeciras which offer whale watching trips and excursions to Morocco. Inland there are the old white villages such as Vejer, drives through the hills to Ronda (2 hours) and some good walking country. Birdwatchers will appreciate a visit to the nearby Doñana National Park. Visitors are also welcomed to participate in the many local events celebrating the culture of Andalusia.
