La Herradura, Costa Tropical - Spain

Along with Almuñecar, La Herradura also  forms the tourist capital of the Costa Tropical. This unspoilt stretch of Spain's southern coastline belongs to the Granada province of Andalucia. It sits between the more touristy Costa del Sol to the west, and the coast of Almería to the east.

La Herradura is a quiet and small village set in a wonderful bay between two cliffy mountains, Punta de la Mona and Cerro Gordo. Years ago it was a fishing hamlet, but today it has developed into a lively residential area attracting Spanish tourists without sacrificing its original charm.

Along the 19 km of local coastline visitors can choose from a wide variety of beaches and small coves, ranging from fine sand to shingle. Watersports are very popular and there are numerous established companies offering water sports courses and equipment hire. 

Divers will be delighted with some of the best underwater scenery here, better than anywhere else along the southern coast. Paragliding and tennis are also popular sporting practices. You can also take a boat trip to the many caves in Cerro Gordo and the exclusive and affluent area of Punta de La Mona.

The horseshoe-shaped sheltered bay of La Herradura and another large natural and beautiful cove, Cerro Gordo, mark the end of the municipality and province. Inland, the approximately 80 km² of dwellings and the town´s amenities rise into the hills and form an impressive cascading effect to the coast. Farmhouses and small cortijos scatter the area which is overlooked by the Peña Escrita natural park. 

La Herradura, on the border within the province of Málaga is large bay is perfect for nautical activities such as diving, due the natural richness of its sea bottom. It is sheltered from the elements and therefore the sea is always calm. It stretches from the Punta de la Mona to the Peñón de Cerro Gordo and offers the best scuba diving in Spain, La Herradura where most of Spain´s diving takes place is aNational Marine Reserve that plays host to an immense variety of marine life.

TheCastle of La Herradura, a defence construction ordered to be built by Carlos III, is an impressive and symbolical building of the area and worth a visit, as is the sporting harbour of Marina del Este, natural park of Cerro Gordo and the estate of vine yards in the mountains behind the La Herradura town.
